Strong population, employment and GDP growth again cemented Selwyn District’s number ranking in BERL’s 2013 review of the economic performance of the nation’s regions. Along with Selwyn retaining number 1 position, the presence of Waimakariri, Ashburton and Hurunui Districts at 2, 3, and 5 confirm the importance of Canterbury in the nation’s overall growth performance.
“The influence of post-earthquake population movements, associated infrastructure developments and employment opportunities continue to underpin this performance. In addition, the latest year saw strong agriculture sector growth further assist these districts around Canterbury to record strong performances,” noted BERL Chief Economist Dr Ganesh Nana.
South Wairarapa District was the interloper in the top 5, coming in at 4, helped by both solid agriculture sector growth and exceptionally strong increase in employment in heavy construction.
Rounding out the top 10, were four more Districts from the Mainland, with Queenstown-Lakes, Buller, Central Otago and Waimate continuing their solid performances from previous years.
The tenth ranked area was Carterton District, assisted by strong population growth and agriculture sector performance.
The rankings combine both short-term one-year and medium-term five-year indicators of population, employment, GDP and business growth.
